- What happend in Experience Technology module?
Since last time did I work with Experience Technology module and it was one of the best module so far in Hyper Island!
We start the module with some lectures with Peter Wärnsberg about module and different hardware we shold work with. Workshop with Robin Gavin in Mobile Processing we created application to mobile phone. Modules was really interessing from day one.
When we should create groups for this module so did we a method: Collect four different groups as designer, tech developer, project leader and a another one I don’t remember. I’m designer and want to challenge me to improve my tech skills and then choose tech develop group. Then should all split up and each group should have one from different group. My group, number 18, members was Alexander Koste, Sara Johansson, Petronella Stille and me.
After all are in group should each group pick up random paper from the box. It was twice of hardware solutions we should use in our projects. Wiimote, webcamera, Arduino and Phidgets.
My group also got webcameras we should work with and personally did I really wish work with Arduino or Phidgets. I’ve Wiimote before and already did something fun with it so it was so important when I can do it when I want.
But something was wrong! Before when we got webcameras was we told about the webcameras was one of the best in marked, but what did we get? Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000 v.1 USB. First I think was “What the heck! It’s M$ hardware and I’m so sure it will be a problem” and I checked it was compatible with Mac. Especially when I need to use it to check/debug the app when I should code in this module. And of course wasn’t compatible with Mac and it was installation disc only for Windows. Third-party appliaction Macam don’t support LifeCam VX-6000 in this moment. So I can’t use it and only have build-in iSight webcameras in my MacBook Pro so it was not a problem.
Our group start with brainstroming what we can/should use webcameras to. We had two different ideas we dicuss much about. First of our idea was Tetris game with webcam as input to move and rotate objects when playing Tetris. Second idea was laser grafitti where we use laser to create huge grafitti on wall/building, but ideas was already do before and it’s a open-source application out.
Tetris was created first time in 1985 by Alexey Pajitnov. Then was it create many clone of Tetris and in different mode and in 3D. Tetris is a classic game because it’s simple and clean game so that’s why it’s so popular and never die.
My role as tech developer did research on witch language I can make it possible with Tetris game and webcam. I found it was best to work with Flash when I found a nice tutorials in Flash 8 ActionScript 2. Then need I find a compatible Tetris game. I found 2 Tetris game where one had source avaible to download with terrible design. And another one created by a norwegian flash developer and it was no source avaible, but I contact and ask for the source. Answer was positive, but I never got the source. It was not a problem since I already did a lot of work on the first Tetris games.
Programming skills in Flash AS2 was not so good as I wish and it got me think about why I don’t learn progamming earlier. Then did I a little personal research how and what it’s best way to learn programming and now are I learning Ruby. Later will I try Python and then improve my earlier “clip-paste-edit-and-try” PHP level. Then Ruby On Rails, Django, jQuery and ActionScript 3.
I’ve work with Flash earlier and very basic of ActionScript (first version and maybe a bit of AS2), but when I start with reading code from Tetris games and webcam motion dectection did I understand a bit. Not so good as I should, but we don’t have enought time and I must do something quick. We used much time with idea process and then we had bad with time, but I was lucky and got a litte help with other flash user. Actually did I know why Tetris and webcam don’t work (communicate) together and had a idea what I should do in timeline, but no idea how to do it in actions (ActionScript 2). So I got a lot of help.
Most of code in application in our project was almost done and the last part of work was design. Alexander Koste created great design and logo and I continue design to be interactive. Animate logos, replace many elements and work with typography in Flash.
Last week of modules should we be done with project and take the bus to Stockholm and set up our place in exhibition. We got place in one of the biggest room in exhibition and it was fun to show our work in exhibition and let guest try our new way of gaming with help of Flash.
I think I don’t have played Tetris so much in this module as I’ve played Tetris since 1989 in NES and a lot of Tetris clones. And of course with Tetris DS.
- GoodBad.Tetris - You will need webcam to enjoy the funnies part of the game
- Gallery from exhibithion. I tried to embed the slideshow without sucess. I know why and where the problem is, but haven’t time to fix it. Will update the post when I’ve fixed it.
- What happend since week 37?
I’m not so proud over my ut-of-date Hyperblogs and will do something with it! Write short about what happend in the last 4-5 weeks!
Week 37: Motion Week (Update)
It’s really here where I lost updating my Hyperblogs because Motion Week was sooo great! So here is my last work from After Effects:
We had lecture by Emil and Even and this is result from workshop about how to understand how After Effects work from A to Z/Å.
I spend a little time for me to make something cool effects by following “Text Blur Titles” from Videocopilot tutorial.
Result from group work by Terese, Tim, Tommi and me.
Last assigment for Motion Week and it’s invidual work to make something self. In the last day when we show our work was I home at Norway, but I was finish with my work and feel I could do more out of it.
So if you like my motion work so will my videos be upload in my gallery at Vimeo.
Week 38 – 39: Communication Skills
First week in Communication Skills had we lecture with Johan Westermark. Great week about how to communicate when we have presentations. Not only voice, but body too! How to give right sign in presentations and have contact with people. The lecture was very useful and I’m glad I learn about it.
Second week was not so great and it was a bit difficult to follow what they talk about and understand what we should do. It should be a interpreter there to help me, but actually was this week very boring.
Week 40 – 43/present: Experience Technology
In this moment are we in second week of Experience Technology and so far is’t very very cool modules in this year (not better or not worse than Motion Week)! Check out what happend in last year:
All group will get different hardware to work with and my group got webcam. Actually did I want to work with Wiimote or Arduino.
So we are working with idea to what we can do something nifty/cool tings with webcam.
We have society communication around this modules here: http://experiencetechnology08.ning.com/
A note to me: Use Ning.com!
- Steve jobs Stanford commencement speech 2005
“Drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, urged graduates to pursue their dreams…”
Andreas tips about two favourite clip in his blogs and one of them was Steve jobs Stanford commencement speech 2005. When I read about what Steve Jobs talk about did it sounds interesting to listen what Steve Jobs talk about his life and story about his company Apple.
When I check out the clip and saw it wasn’t in subtitle. It make me a little arg because I can’t understand what he says. But thank to Youtube do it possible to upload video and some have write subtitle in the videos.
Enjoy!
And thank to Andreas Johansson for sharing of tips!
- First After Effects work!
I have always like motion and sometime find it as inspirations and in the last 1-2 year did I want to learn After Effects. A software I can make great motion video. It was not so easy to find time to learn how to use After Effects.
Until last sunday did Markus have a workshop in After Effects to learn about how the software work and how to use it. And of course make something cool effects so here is my first work from After Effects!
Zombie Nation from Stian A. Giltvedt on Vimeo. Thanks to Markus for the great workshop!
- Hyperblog up-n-running!
Okay now it’s time to say “just another” blog from me and this blog is decide to follow up projects in Hyper Island. Yes you read right, HYPER ISLAND!
